It gives us a great pleasure to inform you that International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences (IJHAS) has successfully completed 1 year of its commitment toward promoting the dissemination of scientific information through this journal. The journal's website was launched in February 2012 and since then there has been no turning back. The journal had received an overwhelming response and 310 were articles submitted to the journal in the year 2012. The journal has maintained an acceptance rate of 36% among decisions taken on articles submitted even in the year of its inception. This too, in a year, when there were the maximum number of medical, dental and pharmacy journals getting registered in a single year. With this splurge of journals, the researcher is quite often puzzled with the question of where he/she should publish his research work. With the institutions and academicians wanting to see benchmarks in research and development, there has been an increased thrust of publications of journals even from institutions. In such a scenario, there is just an added confusion for the authors about where to send the manuscripts. Some authors select journals that charge for the publication and assure immediate acceptance for publication, thereby adopting an easier approach rather than publishing the articles in journals that are peer-reviewed. This sad situation has risen as result of publish-or-perish culture imposed by various authorities as it's seen as a passport to promotion and funding. Various publishing groups have used this opportunity by starting number of journals that not necessarily gives thrust to advancement of science by ensuring the quality of research and scientific writing skills.

We need to reflect here for an instant as to why authors need to publish their research in good scientific journals. First of all, these journals will have an exhaustive peer review process that establishes the validity of research based upon expert knowledge of other researches in the discipline; therefore, preventing falsified work from being accepted within an area of study. Secondly the publications in these journals will have a broader visibility of research work; thus, ensuring the results of the work easily accessible to peers and the larger scientific community. Efforts and willingness to genuinely share research outcomes with the community will lead to better citations to research work. Finally, the higher impact factor that measure the way a journal receives citations to its articles over time reflect the quality of research articles. Publications in these journals will have a higher level of recognition in scientific and research community. Finally, these journals take appropriate time for responding to the authors regarding decision on article and regularly update the article status on their websites. There will be close two way communication between authors and editorial board.

Thus careful selection of a journal, taking into account both scientific and practical considerations, is clearly worth the effort. Not only is the process likely to save valuable time for authors, peer reviewers and journal editors, but it will also increase the likelihood that an article will contribute as much to science as it does to the author's curriculum vitae.

Choosing the right journal for a manuscript can be a challenging exercise and many factors are likely to influence the final decision. It is important to be clear about what is motivating the decision to publish and to have a set of criteria by which the merits of a journal can be assessed; thus, maximizing the chance that the author's expectations will be met. Finally, a system or checklist to actually help choose the best journal for one's manuscript can be invaluable.

As we look to the coming year, we remain positive about the direction of the journal. We have more support than ever with the inclusion of new editors and new ideas. Our editorial board has steadily grown to include leaders in our fields of interest as well as new members of our discipline. The journal has been indexed in many of the indexing authorities and we look forward to index it in Embase and PubMed, which will add more credibility to the journal. Many articles have been accessed over 2000 times and many recent articles also have been viewed more than 1000 times from all over the world. Many first rate manuscripts have evolved by constructive inputs from the reviewers and editors and we are delighted over the evolution of manuscripts submitted to IJHAS. We want to take this opportunity to thank the publishers Medknow Publications for partnering in bringing out IJHAS and their professionalism and experience has helped us carve out the journal in its current format. In conclusion, we would like to thank everyone who has been involved with the journal during the planning, startup and running phases. Every expectation has been exceeded and we look forward to increasing the scope and number of published articles in the future.
